How To Paint a Chevron Wall

Thank you for all of the compliments on the Chevron wall!  We love it and thought we should document the process in case any of you dare to tackle the measuring...

We first painted the walls white because they were tan to begin with and we wanted a gray and white combination.

We then measured the total length of the wall and divided by how many angles or "chevrons" we wanted.  Our wall is about 13.5 feet long, so we converted that to inches (161) and then divided by the amount of chevrons we wanted (10).  This makes each half of a chevron 16.1 inches in length.

To make sure they were straight and level, we measured all of them where the ceiling meets the wall and then measured down from each one the thickness of each chevron stripe (ours are 12" wide).

We used a level to make sure each dot was in line with the one to the left of it and from above.  Doing the wall one "column" at a time made sure all measurements stayed as precise as possible.

On a side note, make sure you tape from point to point in a straight line and then cut the tape at all angles with an Exacto blade to create sharp corners.

If you forgot to cut one, it will look like this:

Disclaimer for crappy pictures:  I just realized the reason these pictures are so unclear is because I forgot to change my camera's resolution back to normal after taking low-res pics for items to sell on Craigslist.  Sorry!

There you have it!

Voila: Guest Room Reveal

After a few nights of painting, measuring, and restyling, the guest room is complete!  My BFF was in town for a short and sweet visit and loved the new room; success!

Here is what the guest room looked like for the past three years since we moved in.  I have to admit, I didn't give it much love.  I kind of used "leftovers" from our previous home's master and guest rooms and threw it all together just to fill the room.  After debating the color scheme and finding the perfect coverlet, I decided on yellow and gray.  I know, very trendy right now, but I can't help but love it.

Here are the BEFORE pics from the very neglected guest room.

Drab and boring, huh?

NOW, may I present to you, our very chic and cheery guest room that went from drab to fab!  VOILA!

Lots and lots of measuring and taping!

Obsessed with this mirror!

The dressers are antiques and were originally my grandparents.  I have repainted them three times (well, actually my mom and I painted the first coat and Jeremy covered the second and third) and decided black is the best look.  The hardware is still original and is a brassy antiqued finish - love with the black.

The bedframe was mine growing up.  My mom recently found the receipt from the antique store and said she paid only 250.00 for it!  I considered stripping it down to its' original iron tone, but decided I like the juxtaposition between the chipping white paint and the modern chevron wall.

I never feel like a room is "complete."  I will continue searching for the perfect accessories and probably a chair, but felt it was blog worthy after our few days of hard labor.

Have you taken any rooms from drab to fab recently?

Sneak Peek...

This has been a crazy week in the Cooley house...TGIF!  We have been hard at work repainting and decorating our guest room in anticipation of my college BFF's visit this weekend!  She moved half way across the country last summer and I don't get to see her nearly enough, so I am super excited to surprise her with a new room!

Here is a hint...one wall was inspired by Mary McDonald's chevron floor painting...

Check back this weekend for before and after pics.  It is definitely going from drab to fab!
