Well Traveled Family Room - San Francisco, CA

Sadly, my sister-in-law, her husband, and our adorable nephew just moved across the country from DC to CA.  We miss the quick hour and a half trip up 95 to visit them, so I was happy to help out with their new family room.  Both my sis-in-law and her husband are very well traveled (he is actually from Jamaica), and have spent a lot of time in all parts of the world.

Most of her travels, however, have been to different countries in Africa.  When she asked me for a "Banana Republic chic" family room, I knew exactly what to do!  There is a fine line between a room looking "themed" and having a culture inspired space; I am confident this room will look super sophisticated but will still be comfortable and family oriented.

She always brings back the most incredible gifts of clothing, wall hangings, art, and jewelry that are all hand made, so I thought this was the perfect opportunity to display and incorporate those special pieces.  This room will bring joy with the vibrant colors and serve as a casual and comfortable space for their sweet little family.

Here is the concept board I sent her below - I can't wait to see how it turns out!  I think my favorite part will be the gallery wall over top of the pillow-covered sofa to incorporate different wooden frames, fabrics, family portraits, and small art wall hangings.

Do you have any places you have been that have served as inspiration while decorating?
